Starring CARMEN! by Anika Denise

-This Drama Queen Loves The Spotlight -

Carmen has an enormous imagination and loves to be in the spotlight. She's an actress, a singer, a dancer and also designs costumes. She performs a new show every night and rehearses for her shows each morning. When her younger brother Eduardo asks if he can be in her shows he’s always given minor, non-speaking parts such as a rock or lamp.

But one day Carmen’s parents announce that they need a break from being Carmen’s audience every night. Knowing the show must go on, Carmen pretends her toys are the audience, but it’s just not the same. So the show begins to fade and Carmen feels more like sulking than rehearsing. However, even as a sulker, she manages to be quite dramatic.

Will there be a way out of this drama queen’s predicament?

My Thoughts

What Concerned Me:  Nothing

What I Liked Most: As an elementary school secretary, I remember a very extroverted, precocious, little girl coming into the office while she was waiting for her mother after school. She asked if she could show me something, then proceeded to recite words from a musical as she danced around the floor. I smile just remembering it.

I'm sure we all know someone who tends to need the floor, but the winning part of this book isn't just the humor, but the fact that Carmen learns to share the spotlight with her brother.

The illustrations are bright and very colorful, to match the dramatic flair. It's a fun story that kids will certainly enjoy.
