Barkus Dog Dreams by Patricia MacLachlan

Just Right For Readers Who Are Between Picture Books And Chapter Books

This is the second book in the Barkus series. It contains five short chapters that will cause little ones to keep coming back for more. The stories are about Nicky (the redhead), Barcus (the brown dog), Baby, (the cat) and Millie, (the neighbor's dog that is introduced in the last chapter). The three visit the vet, attend a party, rescue some farm animals, and meet a new friend, Millie.
Each chapter has a small lesson, sometimes you almost have to stop and think about what it was, such as helping, and friendship, but nothing didactic or distracting.

My Thoughts

My Concerns: Nothing
What I Liked Most: Each chapter is a complete story so a sense of accomplishment for the reader comes quicker rather than needing to finish the book.

As with most books in a series, I would suggest reading Barkus first. That way you will get to know the characters a little better. However, this book is complete and you don't have to read them in order.

* What is ATOS Book Level (BL)?
ATOS Book Levels use the ATOS readability formula and represent the difficulty of the text. For instance, a book level of 2.5 means the text could likely be read independently by a student whose reading skills are at the level of a typical second grader during the fifth month of school.
